“A breathtaking sculpture, perfect in form and entirely in black.” This is how Bugatti describes La Voiture Noire, the one-off hypercar created to celebrate 110 years of the marque. Conceived as a work of haute couture engineering, the design vision was twenty years in the making — decades during which design, materials, and technology needed to catch up with the vision. The physical build itself took two years (2019–2021).
More than speed or engineering prowess, La Voiture Noire is about making a statement: luxury defined by individuality, artistry, and uncompromising craftsmanship. Every curve, every surface, every detail has been meticulously handcrafted, culminating in a seamless carbon-fibre body finished in “Black Carbon Glossy”. The material is so perfect it appears cast from a single piece. In creating La Voiture Noire, Bugatti sought not only to push technological and design boundaries but also to honour its own heritage, continuing the legacy of innovation, artistry, and refinement established by Jean Bugatti nearly a century ago.

Heritage Reimagined
La Voiture Noire draws direct inspiration from the Type 57 SC Atlantic, Jean Bugatti’s most celebrated creation, whose dorsal seam running from bonnet to rear gave it an unmistakable presence. Only four Atlantics were built between 1936 and 1938, each individually tailored for a customer. Today, these cars are among the most valuable classic automobiles in the world. La Voiture Noire is not simply a reinterpretation — it is a modern homage, transforming the Atlantic’s grace and daring into a 21st-century hypercar.
The long bonnet, curved wings, and sleek rear echo the Atlantic’s silhouette, while the central spine recalls the Atlantic’s riveted seam. Back then, aluminium panels had to be riveted together. Carbon fibre can now be formed as a single, uninterrupted surface. Its 8.0-litre W16 engine, with four turbochargers tuned for 1,500 horsepower, drives all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox, delivering immense force with precision.

Construction and Craftsmanship
Achieving that seamless construction required extraordinary precision. Bugatti set out to create surfaces that appear unified rather than assembled, reducing shut lines and joins to an absolute minimum. Advanced resin-transfer moulding allows large carbon-fibre sections to be formed in a single process. Fibres are aligned by hand for structural continuity. Tolerances are measured within fractions of a millimetre, and the deep gloss finish ensures the carbon fibre communicates authenticity rather than decoration.
Every design element flows together: vents carved into smooth surfaces, headlights recessed within curves, a continuous rear light strip spanning the car’s width, and six exhaust outlets forming a precise geometric signature. This is a vehicle conceived as a complete visual and structural harmony, where engineering and art converge.

Technical Achievement
La Voiture Noire was not merely a styling exercise. Development consumed over 65,000 hours, covering chassis tuning, aerodynamics, and powertrain calibration. The carbon-fibre monocoque delivers rigidity far beyond traditional metals while reducing weight to approximately 1,950 kg. That mass, combined with 1,600 Nm of torque delivered between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm, produces a power-to-weight ratio of 758 bhp per tonne. The result: 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds and a top speed of 260 mph.
The advanced suspension system ensures stability even at extreme speeds, while carbon-ceramic brakes provide stopping power commensurate with the car’s formidable performance. Every component has been calibrated to work in harmony, creating a car that is as capable as it is rare.
Inside, the craftsmanship continues. Hand-stitched leather, precision-milled aluminium, and bespoke carbon-fibre detailing create a cockpit where every control is purpose-built. Even stitching patterns and metallic surfaces receive meticulous attention. It is a driving environment conceived as a unified work of art, reflecting the same meticulous attention to detail as the exterior.

Into Private Hands
Since its unveiling at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, La Voiture Noire has appeared publicly only a handful of times. Beyond its debut and an appearance at Villa d’Este where it won the Design Award, rare sightings include a brief outing in Zurich and participation in a private supercar event in Croatia. Early speculation linked it to high-profile collectors, but the owner’s identity remains unconfirmed. The car was originally sold for a base price of €11 million (approximately £9.5 million / $12.5 million), or roughly $18.9 million after taxes, making it the most expensive new car ever sold — a modern reflection of its craftsmanship, rarity, and historical significance.
Now, La Voiture Noire is available for private sale through SBX Cars and Broad Arrow’s Private Treaty Program, with no official asking price announced. However, the market context is instructive. The Type 57 SC Atlantic that inspired this modern interpretation sold for over £23 million ($30 million) in 2010, and three are known to survive. As a one-of-one creation from Bugatti’s modern era, La Voiture Noire occupies a unique position: newer, fully functional, and unrepeatable. Whether it will command a premium over its original price remains to be seen, but the sale will provide the first valuation of a car that has, until now, remained largely out of public view.
The car’s rarity extends beyond production numbers. Each sighting since its debut has been fragmentary, and its true whereabouts are known only to its owner.

Final Thoughts
In creating La Voiture Noire, Bugatti embraced both privilege and responsibility: the privilege of building on a century of heritage, and the responsibility to carry that legacy forward, fusing innovation, artistry, and refinement into a 21st-century hypercar. As designer Etienne Salomé explains, “We worked long and hard on this design until there was nothing we could improve. For us, the coupé represents the perfect form with a perfect finish.”

La Voiture Noire was previously listed for private sale through SBX Cars in collaboration with Broad Arrow Private Sales. The listing was handled through their private treaty program.
