Forty-one complications packed into a 45mm case measuring under 15mm thick represent a staggering achievement in mechanical watchmaking, and a remarkable way to celebrate Vacheron Constantin’s 270th anniversary. The Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première unites astronomical functions, perpetual calendar displays, sidereal time, a split-seconds celestial vault chronograph, and the chiming of Big Ben’s Westminster quarters within a single watch. The Solaria proves that even in an age of digital everything, mechanical ingenuity can still inspire genuine wonder. It also offers advanced time displays including a 24-hour second time zone with day/night indicator, and ISO 8601 calendar functions such as week of the year and day of the week.
Heritage and Engineering Excellence
The Solaria continues Vacheron Constantin’s centuries-old tradition of astronomical watchmaking. Since 1755, the Maison has crafted timepieces inspired by humanity’s fascination with celestial phenomena—from moon-phase pocket watches to sidereal time instruments prized by early astronomers. Developed in the bespoke Les Cabinotiers workshop, this ultra-grand complication advances that heritage with functions such as real-time solar position tracking, declination, and a world-first celestial vault chronograph.

Technical Excellence
At the centre of the Solaria is the in-house Calibre 3655, a movement integrating 1,521 individually hand-finished components and 204 jewels, condensed into a calibre measuring 36mm across and only 10.96mm thick. Its 41 complications focus heavily on astronomical and calendar functions, including solar height, sunrise and sunset times, equation of time, precise tracking of stars and constellations, and tides. The movement also features a high-Q silicon balance and tourbillon, enhancing precision and stability.
The watch also features a Westminster minute repeater, powered by four gongs and hammers that reproduce Big Ben’s iconic chime with exceptional acoustic fidelity. Protected by seven patents, this chiming mechanism integrates seamlessly without affecting case thickness. Other key complications include a perpetual calendar, moon-phase displays, and sidereal time, and a split-seconds chronograph, set on a dial finished with sunburst, satin, and sandblasted textures in a refined grey-black-gold palette for clarity and elegance.
Beyond the movement, the Solaria employs a multi-cam wheel system that balances solar functions—sunrise, sunset, and equation of time—while preserving slim proportions. Its sapphire case back is metallised to depict constellations, framing rotating discs for the celestial vault and power reserve and second time zone. The result is a union of technical ingenuity and aesthetic restraint, central to its lasting appeal.

Dedicated to preserving traditional horology, Vacheron Constantin engaged over 20 expert artisans to realise the Solaria, blending centuries-old savoir-faire with modern precision. Produced from responsibly sourced precious metals and designed for long-term maintenance, the watch reflects the Maison’s ethos of creating heirloom-quality timepieces.
Setting New Standards in Haute Horlogerie
Surpassing landmark creations such as the 57-complication Reference 57260 and the 16-complication Tour de l’Île, the Solaria redefines what is possible in a wearable mechanical watch and stands as an anniversary timepiece that honours both the Maison’s astronomical heritage and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of mechanical complexity.
