Fabian Oefner: Where Science Meets Art

Exploding Ferraris, warped Leica cameras, crystallised whisky flames—these are the visions of Swiss artist Fabian Oefner, based in New York, who fuses science and art to expose the surprising marvels of mechanical objects. Across photography, sculpture, and digital media, his work captivates with intricate detail and conceptual depth. From disintegrated supercars to magnetic ferrofluids frozen in motion, Oefner’s creations challenge perception whilst revealing the hidden beauty within everyday objects and natural phenomena.

Precision Through Destruction

Oefner’s journey began in childhood, dismantling household objects to understand their inner workings whilst simultaneously building telescopes to explore distant galaxies. This duality between destruction and creation, between the microscopic and the macroscopic, would later define his artistic practice. After studying product design in Switzerland, he developed a methodology that treats every screw, gasket, and wire as a character in a larger narrative.

The Disintegrating Series represents his most recognised body of work. Each piece requires photographing thousands of individual components under controlled conditions. Then he digitally orchestrates them into compositions that suggest explosive motion whilst maintaining visual harmony. The process is painstakingly meticulous—a restored 1970s Lamborghini Miura required cataloguing numerous parts over months of collaboration at Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy.

Rather than capturing real explosions, Oefner employs digital composition alongside plaster moulds to simulate cinematic disintegration effects. By combining hands-on craftsmanship with digital techniques, he achieves striking realism, setting his work apart in an age of shortcuts.

The same meticulous approach that defines Oefner’s Disintegrating Series was applied to the Riva Aquarama, where he deconstructed the classic Italian boat into thousands of components and digitally orchestrated them into a precise, visually striking composition. Every element—the sleek hull, polished deck, and intricate fittings—is captured and arranged to reveal hidden patterns and structures, transforming the familiar vessel into a dynamic study of form, engineering, and design.

Capturing the Invisible

Beyond his automotive disintegrations, Oefner has developed several other series that explore different aspects of perception and reality. His Heisenberg Objects explore perception through deliberate distortion. Familiar items are cast in resin, sliced into strips, then reassembled into warped forms. These reveal themselves fully only from specific viewing angles. The technical precision required to maintain recognisability whilst achieving abstraction demonstrates Oefner’s mastery of both traditional craftsmanship and conceptual depth.

The Infinite Moment in Time series pushes these boundaries further, collaborating with CERN physicists in 2020 to explore patterns invisible to human perception. High-speed photography freezes magnetic ferrofluids and chemical reactions into sculptural forms, creating works that function as both aesthetic objects and visual studies of natural phenomena.

His ambitious Space Time Memory NFT series took this science-inspired approach to new heights, incorporating carbon fibre ‘Space Keys’ that travelled to the International Space Station, making them amongst the few artworks to literally transcend earthly boundaries. All five pieces were sold via RM Sotheby’s in February 2022 for a total of £1.3 million.

Exploring Conceptual Works

Oefner continues to expand his study of form and perception through conceptual works. His Volumen series reinterprets three-dimensional space using layered photographic and sculptural techniques, transforming static structures into fluid, almost architectural compositions. The works evoke a sense of motion suspended in time, merging engineering precision with abstract beauty.

He has also released new iterations of his Spatial Book project, building on earlier editions to further explore the relationship between movement, fragmentation, and spatial awareness. By dissecting mechanical icons such as the Ferrari 250 TR into sculptural studies, Oefner bridges the gap between photography and architecture. Through both Volumen and Spatial Book, he continues to blend scientific observation with artistic invention, offering viewers a multi-dimensional experience that redefines how form and motion coexist.

Current Market Activity

Oefner’s market trajectory reflects a growing appetite for interdisciplinary contemporary art. His Disintegrating Series prints have shown consistent performance at auction.

The digital art market has proved particularly receptive. His Space Time Memory NFT collection totalled £1.3 million via RM Sotheby’s in 2022. This demonstrated strong confidence in his transition between physical and digital media. This versatility positions his works well for future market evolution.

Secondary market activity remains robust, with Infinite Moment in Time prints continuing to sell steadily depending on edition size and subject matter. The limited nature of his production — constrained by the time-intensive documentation process — ensures supply remains controlled. Authentication is handled via blockchain for NFTs and gallery certificates for prints. Proper conservation practices maintain the works’ condition over time.

His institutional presence has grown steadily, with his ongoing relationship with M.A.D. Gallery providing consistent market presence. These gallery partnerships offer crucial support for emerging collectors, providing authentication, provenance documentation, and conservation guidance.

Price points have remained relatively stable, with his larger Disintegrating works commanding the highest values, followed by the unique Heisenberg Objects. The Infinite Moment prints provide entry-level opportunities. This tiered pricing structure allows collectors to engage with his works across different budget levels whilst maintaining exclusivity at the premium end.

The Art of Scientific Discovery

Oefner’s fusion of art and science offers fresh perspectives on the world, transforming technical precision into evocative visual narratives. His meticulous approach—disassembling objects, capturing ephemeral phenomena, and reconstructing them into enduring forms—yields works that are both aesthetic treasures and explorations inspired by scientific observation. His creations stand as a quiet testament to human curiosity, deftly bridging artistic expression and science-inspired enquiry in a manner that lingers in the mind.
