Montegrappa Dante Alighieri Inferno: Limited Edition Pens

Hell, as Dante imagined it, descends through nine circles of increasing torment. In 2021, seven centuries after the poet’s death, Montegrappa rendered that descent in gold and silver as a fountain pen. The Dante Alighieri Inferno series comprises just nine pens in 18-carat gold and 333 in sterling silver. The numbers aren’t arbitrary: nine mirrors Hell’s circles in Dante’s Inferno, while 333 reflects the structure of the Divine Comedy itself—three-line stanzas, 33 cantos per section. What results is a writing instrument that functions as both literary homage and tactile map of the underworld.

The Dante Alighieri Inferno: A Map of the Underworld

The barrel is carved with demons, punishments, and the architecture of damnation. Relief engravings illustrate the pilgrim’s descent, with every architectural feature sculpted in miniature using lost-wax casting. The process gives the pen remarkable depth and texture, transforming a smooth cylinder into something that shifts with light and touch.

Literary Heritage in Three Dimensions

The design begins at the hand-enamelled forest where Dante lost his way, continues through each circle of punishment, and ends with Lucifer frozen in ice, eternally devouring Judas. The devil’s tail runs the full pen length, curving into the pocket clip—a practical design that also unites the pen’s narrative from base to crown. Every punishment and design element is rendered in detailed sculptural relief through a precise lost-wax casting process in 18-carat gold. Beneath this gold surface, Montegrappa’s proprietary Montegrappite resin simulates glowing magma, adding subtle warmth and three-dimensional depth.

Technical Specifications and Craft

Each Inferno pen features an 18-carat solid gold nib engraved with Dante’s profile and comes in six sizes: extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, double broad, and a 1.1 stub nib suited for italic or calligraphic writing. The ebonite feed works with a piston filling system, allowing generous ink flow and ink capacity—important for the broader nibs.

Weighing around 125 grams, the pen’s weight is carefully balanced across its finely detailed barrel. It measures approximately 149 millimetres long and 20 millimetres in diameter, offering a substantial but comfortable grip. The combination of warm gold overlay and volcanic-inspired Montegrappite resin beneath creates an effect reminiscent of molten lava.

Packaging complements the pen’s theme, with each piece housed in a leather-bound book-style box embossed with Dante’s chilling inscription from Hell’s gate: “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate” (“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here”).

A Lasting Design

Priced at around £3,637 (approximately $4,600) for the sterling silver edition, with the gold version commanding upwards of £50,000 ($62,000), the Dante Alighieri Inferno remains one of Montegrappa’s most exclusive releases. Seven centuries after the Divine Comedy reshaped Italian literature, Montegrappa has given the Inferno physical form: detailed, substantial, and unmistakably rooted in the poem that made Hell unforgettable.
